그렘(Grimm: 빌 머레이 분)은 광대로 변장하여 은행을 턴다.
인질들을 잡아 놓고 공범인 루머스(Loomis: 랜디 퀘이드 분)와 자기의 애인인 필라스(Phyllis: 지나 데이비스 분)와 함께 석방된 인질인 것처럼 가장하여 무사히 탈출하는데, 공항으로 가는 길을 몰라서 차를 타고 헤매다가 강도를 만나 은행 턴 돈을 다 털린다.
그러나, 옷 속에 숨긴 돈은 남아 있었고 경찰의 추적을 피하려고 옷을 바꿔 입으려 아파트로 들어간 사이 차를 견인당하고 만다.
고생 끝에 택시를 탔지만 사고가 생겨 경찰의 추적이 이들에게로 집중되는데 도망하다가 도박판에 우연히 말려들게 되어 상황이 더 얽혀 버린다.
경찰이 도박꾼들을 체포하는 사이, 간신히 버스를 잡아 타고 공항 근처에서 내린 이들은 경찰이 남자 2명과 여자 1명의 은행 강도단들을 찾고 있다는 사실을 알게 되는데…
With the aid of his girlfriend, Phyllis Potter, and best friend, Loomis, Grimm enters a Manhattan bank dressed as a clown, creates a hostage situation and executes a flawless robbery.
The only thing left for the trio to do is make their getaway out of the city and to the airport.
It sounds simple enough, but it seems that fate deserts them immediately after the bank heist.
One mishap after another conspires to keep these robbers from reaching freedom.
