클리프 헨더슨과 그의 가족은 일본으로 가는 길에 SS 클라리돈에 탑승하고 있다.
클라리돈은 고물더미로 향하기 전 마지막 항해를 하는 아주 오래된 배다.
항해 도중에 엔진실에서 폭발이 발생하고 배가 침수되어 가고 있었다.
선장은 그의 배가 침몰할 것이라는 것을 받아들이는데 어려움을 겪는다.
결국 피선 명령이 떨어지고 배가 침몰되어 가는데 헨더슨의 아내 로리가 배가 침수되며 파손되는 과정에서 떨어진 기둥에 깔리고 만다.
엔진실에 있는 남자들이 선체를 떠받치기 위해 필사적으로 일하는 동안 헨더슨은 승무원 중 하나인 행크 로슨의 도움으로 난파선에서 그의 아내를 구출하려고 무진 애를 쓰지만 배는 서서히 잠겨오고 아내는 서서히 이별을 예감한다.
